Membership in Grantmakers Without Borders

Who are Gw/oB's Members?
Grantmakers Without Borders' members—some 160 in total—are a diverse group of organizations and individuals passionately engaged in global grantmaking. Our largest constituencies include private foundations (including many family foundations) and grantmaking public charities (including many women's funds as well as international intermediaries). A number of individual donors, many of whom have donor-advised funds, are also active in the network. Philanthropic support organizations also participate in Gw/oB, as do academics working in the field of philanthropy. Most Gw/oB members are US-based, though a growing number are based elsewhere around the globe. Geographically, our members are working throughout the global South. The issues our members fund are wide-ranging, from the environment, to health, to women's rights, to economic empowerment. Some of our members are quite new to global giving, while others are among the most respected and experienced grantmakers working in the field today. The incredible diversity of Gw/oB's membership, their passionate commitment to social change and their willingness to share their knowledge and expertise are among Gw/oB's greatest strengths and make Gw/oB the go-to network for global social change grantmakers.

Who is Eligible to Join Gw/oB?
When it comes to philanthropic networks, Gw/oB's membership is among the most diverse. Gw/oB welcomes the following as members:

  • Private foundations
  • Public foundations, such as community foundations, women's funds, and other grantmaking intermediaries. To be eligible for membership, such organizations need to meet some important criteria:
    • Such organizations should be devoting at least half of their annual program budget to grants OR making at least $1 million in grants annually.
    • Such organizations' grantmaking should be targeted to independent entities rather than to subsidiary chapters or formal affiliates, and it should be aimed at multiple organizations rather than at just a few.
  • Faith-based giving programs, provided they do not impose their religious views through their grantmaking
  • Governmental grantmaking programs
  • Corporate foundations, provided they are strong and proven believers in corporate social responsibility
  • Philanthropic advocacy and support organizations, such as regional associations of grantmakers and donor networks and affinity groups
  • Philanthropic advisors and consultants
  • Academia working in the realm of philanthropy
  • Individual donors with a significant commitment to global social change, including individuals donating at least $10,000 annually to international work and those with donor-advised funds or related grantmaking vehicles.

What are Gw/oB's Membership Dues?
Gw/oB's membership dues have been set with a low barrier to entry in mind. At the same time, because Gw/oB's work is funded almost entirely by membership dues, members are encouraged to go beyond the regular dues fee to become Sustaining Circle Members. Sustaining Circle members provide Gw/oB with financial support over and above their regular dues, demonstrating their strong commitment to the organization, its mission and success.

For most membership types, a sliding scale is used to assess dues. For these membership types, dues are based on a member's internationally oriented grants payout. This includes cross-border grants (that is, grants made to organizations outside the home country) and grants made in the home country with global intent (for example to an international relief organization, or for global policy concerns). For other membership types, there is a flat dues amount.

Below is a table of current Gw/oB membership dues.
