Advice for Donors
Responding to natural disasters in Pakistan and Central America
In making recommendations on disaster response, Gw/oB looks at the following criteria:
- Gw/oB places preference on funding local organizations, directly or through US-based intermediaries, rather than on multinational non-profits working in the region.
- Gw/oB places preference on organizations explicitly focused on the most marginalized local communities, including women and indigenous communities.
- Gw/oB places preference on organizations that take a long-term view of their disaster response. Such organizations address immediate needs while looking also at long-term rehabilitation.
- Gw/oB places preference on organizations with a proven track record in the region.
- When recommending US intermediaries who are re-granting to local organizations, the latter must be well known to the intermediary rather than organizations newly identified.
- Gw/oB looks for funding opportunities where a small grant can have a positive impact.
